1998: Michigan State defeats Ohio State to ruin perfect season

6-6 Michigan State comes back to defeat undefeated Ohio State in Columbus in 1998. The Spartans were helped by a quiet Horseshoe crowd that let the Spartans' offense operate in peace and quiet. I guess you can't cry and be loud at the same time:

1996: Ohio State loses to Michigan

Ohio State once again loses in front of a home crowd, this time to hated Michigan, 14-9. The loss causes formerly Ohio State to have no chance at a claim of a national championship, and saw their perfect season ruined.

1994: Ranked Ohio State Embarrassed 63-14 by Penn State

Ohio State was completely embarrassed by Penn State. Penn State got out to a 35-0 half time lead, and continued to roll to a 49-0 lead. Ohio State scored a couple of meaningless touchdowns against Penn State's reserves to help the score become a more respectable 63-14.

1993: Loss to Michigan Prevents National Championship

Ohio State visited the Big House in 1993 with an undefeated record, suffering a tie against Wisconsin the week before. They were resoundly beaten by the Wolverines, 28-0. Losing by four touchdowns against your arch-rival is bad enough, but this loss cost Ohio State a chance at a national championship. With a win against Michigan, they would have had an undefeated season and the best record in college football.

1980 Rose Bowl: Ohio State loses National Championship to USC

Ohio State goes to the Rose Bowl and loses to Southern Cal, 17-16. This cost Ohio State the game and a claim to the national championship. Instead, they lost, but Art Schlichter covered his gambling debts.

1978 Gator Bowl: Ohio State Loses Mind, Coach

1976 Rose Bowl: Ohio State Loses to UCLA, Woody Hits Someone

Woody Hayes assaults another person as Ohio State sees a perfect season destroyed by a loss in the Rose Bowl.

1974: #1 Ohio State upset by MSU, 16-13

Ohio State entered the game in East Lansing as a clear #1 in the polls, and finished the day with a 16-13 loss; after ending up in the end zone on the last play of the day (as well as the play before, according to Buckeye fans and the pictures in The Lantern that Monday). It took the referees and Big-10 commissioner Wayne Duke over 20 minutes to declare MSU the winner, since there was an offensive penalty on the last play.

1973 Ohio State Ties Michigan

Ohio State and Michigan tie each other, ruining each other's perfect records, allowing undefeated Penn State and Notre Dame a claim to the national title.

1971 Rose Bowl: Ohio State Loses to Stanford

Yawn. Ohio States marches thru an easy Big Ten schedule, and then loses in the Rose Bowl - ruining a perfect season.

1969 Michigan 24, Ohio State 12

Michigan gets revenge for Woody Hayes' classless decision to go for 2 points with Ohio State leading Michigan 48-14 in 1968. Michigan destroys Ohio State's perfect season, and a claim to the national title with undefeated Penn State and Texas.

1961 Ohio State ties 3-5-2 TCU

Ohio States ties a losing TCU team, which ensures Ohio State does not have the best record in football in 1961. It doesn't stop some Buckeye fans to ignore the reality of the situation and proclaim Ohio State #1 anyway.

1957 Ohio State loses to TCU 14-18

Again, Buckeye fans must not believe this loss occurred, because they still claim a fictional national championship from this year, even though they didn't have the best record.
