Woody Hayes was a thug.
He was involved in several assaults that were ignored by Ohio State.
Only when such a disgusting display was on national television on a
large stage did Ohio State act. We see typical Ohio State behavior: the
school ignores behavior that it should be acting against, which
facilitates behavior. It then blows up in their faces, and they are
forced to act, and sometimes will try to cover it up.
He was also a cheater.
Twice in Hayes' tenure was Ohio State found guilty of NCAA violations.
1978: Woody Goes Nuts in Public
Woody Hayes is best known for his assault on Clemson linebacker Charlie
Baumann. After Art Schlichter threw an interception to Baumann, he
returned the ball and wound up being tackled on the Ohio State
sidelines. Unfortunately for Baumann, he wound up tackled near Woody
Hayes. Once Baumann got up, Hayes punched Baumann in the neck. Not only
did he assault Baumann, he sucker-punched Bowman in the most gutless
and cowardly manner.
The question that should be raised regarding this play is whether
Schlichter threw the interception to pay off gambling debts.
Here's the thug in action:
